It’s been a celebratory time here in New York with the passage of same-sex marriage and we want to thank everyone who fought hard, called their representatives and stood up for marriage equality. Meganda Films is ecstatic to be in NYC to witness history and celebrate with our friends. It’s a great time to live in this beautiful city, but hailing from California the moment is definitely bittersweet.
In 2008 California voters passed Proposition 8, which was a constitutional amendment that recognized marriage only between a man and a woman. It was a dark time in California’s history and I still remember the sadness I felt when I learned of the news. Proposition 8 is currently in appeals and we believe that marriage equality and justice will eventually prevail in our old home state.
8: The Mormon Proposition is one of the greatest documentary I’ve seen about this issue and we strongly encourage you to watch it when you can. It received stellar reception when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. You can find it on DVD or on Netflix.
While New Yorkers are celebrating this great victory, we can’t forget that an injustice to one is an injustice to all and that we all must continue to fight for equality for every marginalized community.
