In searching for a potential contender for this weeks Spotlight, I stumbled upon a list, distributed in 2011 titled: The Hollywood Reporters Power 100 Women in the Entertainment industry. The list starts off with 1-10. Scrolling down, it was empowering to see all these successful women in high positions in monstrous companies such as Disney and Universal. However as connected as a felt to these women, there was something missing: Diversity. I don’t want to, undermine these women, as they undoubtedly, went through struggles and worked their asses off to gain the status and recognition they hold today, but there is a noticeable lack of minorities among this group of successful Women. Eventually, when I scrolled to 20/100 Oprah Winfrey made her appearance on the list.

Oprah Winfrey, is a women with power in the industry that I have admired since I was in elementary school. I remember doing a report on her for an assignment about an inspirational figure in the 3rd or 4th grade. I didn’t know the first thing about her, but I knew she was someone worthy of respect. That definitely spells out the position of power Oprah holds in the world.

Oprah is another story of starting from the bottom and rising to the top. She took a pivotal turn in her career at a young age when she worked at the local radio station. From their Oprah would climb the ladder to be an Anchor Woman and a host on a local talk show. Not too many years later Oprah would sign on to develop her own show The Oprah Winfrey Show” which opened up many door and would push her to become the Global Icon she is today.

The Oprah Winfrey Show started as your average tabloid talk show, but Oprah quickly shifted focus to talk about more relevant topics such as social issues, and politics. I feel like this shift is so important to the essence of who Oprah is because it showed the world that she cared about more then just the crazy rumors about celebrities. Her work in humanities and giving back to the world is phenomenal and inspiring. A perfect example of sharing the wealth.

As she she get older, Oprah continues to hold her power in the industry, owning her own network, and appearing in movies. Her most recent appearance was in the film: The Butler. Directed by Lee Daniels, the film is an American History Piece about a black butler working in the White House.

I could go on and on about Oprah. She is a well known global figure, who inspires and encourages people of all demographics to strive toward success and give back to the world!
